[English]show one’s colours

网上资源,  外语 Lee 发表于 2007/3/5 14:14:44 　 colour这个词解作“颜色”，这是大家都知道的了，但除了“颜色”之外，它还有别的意义，colour加上s构成复数后，除了解作“各种颜色”之外，它有时还具有和“颜色”毫不相干的意思，其一是在with flying colours这个成语中，作“军舰上的小旗”解。在成语show one’s colours中，colours则解释为“本质、本性、真面目”，所以show one’s colours便为“暴露真面目”之意，但它并不总是用于贬义的，显露出原来不为人知的优良品格也同样可以用show one’s colours： He always claimed to be a faithful friend of ours and did not show his colours until we were in trouble and were badly in need of his help. 他总是自称是我们忠实的朋友，但到了我们遇上了麻烦，非常需要他的帮助时，他才现了原形。 People tend to show their colours in times of emergency. 在紧急时刻，人们往往暴露他们的本质。 We all thought him a timid boy but he showed his colours when he rushed into the burning cottage to save a baby. 我们原来都以为他是个羞怯的男孩，但当他冲进着火的农舍抢救出一个小孩时，我们才看到了他的真正品格。
