UIMA 1.0 becomes OASIS Standard

Members have approved the Unstructured Information Management Architecture version 1.0 as an OASIS Standard. UIMA defines a standard for semantic search and content analytics. Congratulations to the UIMA TC chair, David Ferrucci of IBM, and to all TC participants, including representatives of IBM and EMC, for this accomplishment.

CAP IPAWS Profile 1.0 public review begins

This profile describes an interpretation of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) OASIS Standard necessary to meet the needs of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), a "system of systems" created by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This public review ends 2 May.

IMI enables the use of Information Cards to universally manage personal digital identities online. This public review ends 27 April.

OpenDocument TC seeks input for "ODF-Next"

The OpenDocument Format (ODF) TC invites input on technical contents of "ODF-Next", the provisional name for the next major version of ODF. The TC has created the ODF Requirements Subcommittee, chaired by Bob Jolliffe of the South Africa Department of Science and Technology, to gather, categorize and prioritize proposals for ODF-Next.

OASIS introduces new dues for small Sponsors

Organizations employing fewer than 10 people are now eligible to participate in OASIS at the Sponsor level for 9,500 USD per year. This represents a savings over the 12,000 USD dues which previously applied to all companies with fewer than 100 employees. OASIS added the new level to make it easier for small companies to receive full visibility for their contributions to open standards.

Success of eGov Brussels workshop prompts plans for DC event

The OASIS eGov Member Section announced plans for a workshop in Washington, DC in response to a successful event held in Brussels on 19 Feb. The Belgian Federal Ministry of Finance (SPFF) hosted the Brussels workshop, which had more than 90 registrants from 20 countries. The DC eGov event will be hosted by the World Bank on 17 April and will offer a unique opportunity to exchange experiences amongst professionals from the public administration and the private sector regarding the significance of open standards for efficient and transformational government. Both workshops are sponsored by IBM, Microsoft, and Adobe.

OASIS co-organizes OntologySummit2009

This summit will address the intersection of the technical standards world and the community of ontology and semantic technologies. The goal of the event, which will be held 6-7 April in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, is to articulate concrete challenges that will serve as a roadmap to galvanize both communities.
