An old man shuffled slowly into a restaurant. With shoulders bent forward, he leaned on his trusty cane with each unhurried step. A young waitress named Mary ran over to him, and said, "Here, sir! Let me give you a hand with that chair."一个老人步履缓慢地走进一家餐馆。他弓着背，手里拄着牢靠的拐杖，每一步都不慌不忙。一个名叫玛丽的年轻女服务员向他跑去，说道：“这边请，先生！让我帮您把椅子拿出来吧。”
She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss." "You're welcome, sir!" she replied. "And my name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment, and if you need anything anytime, just wave at me!"老人用轻柔而又清晰的声音说道：“女士，真是太感谢你了！”“不用客气，先生！”她回答说。“我叫玛丽。我一会儿就回来，如果您有什么需要的话，随时向我招招手！”
After the old man finished his breakfast, Mary handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, "Come back and see us, sir!" He turned with his whole body, winked a smile, and nodded a thank you.老人吃完早餐后，玛丽把拐杖递给他，并与他一同走到大门口。她一边为他开门，一边说道：“欢迎您再来，先生！”他转过身来，微笑着眨眨眼，向她点点头表示谢意。
When Mary went to clean his table, she found a business card under his plate, and a note scribbled on a napkin.当玛丽回来收拾老人的餐桌时，她在他用过的碟子底下发现了一张名片和写在餐巾纸上的潦草字迹。
The note on the napkin read: "Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself too. It shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. The old man Mary had waited on was the owner of the restaurant where she worked. This was the first time that Mary and any of his employees had ever seen him in person.玛丽接待的这个人正是她所工作的餐馆的主人。这是玛丽和其他雇员第一次见到他们的雇主本人。
